Recordkeeping (three-ring binder)—health and attendance records, emergency plans
Keeping records up to date can help in an emergency situation. In the event of an emergency, it is essential to know the health history of all students involved. This also can be another place to keep copies of material safety data sheets for chemicals being stored and used in the school. Having documented emergency plans, such as tornado and fire plans, also is important.

Copy Machine
Copy machines, laser printers, fax machines and other office equipment can produce ozone. Good ventilation of rooms containing this equipment is necessary to prevent high ozone levels. If ozone levels build up in a room, people can experience headaches and eye, nose or throat irritation.

Overhead and task lights (fluorescent)
Proper lighting is essential for a good working and learning environment. Fluorescent light bulbs can contain mercury vapor. If fluorescent lights are used, be sure to dispose of them properly after use. If they are disposed of improperly, the mercury vapor can enter and contaminate the environment.

Carpeting
New carpeting can release formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is a colorless gas with a strong odor. Breathing air that contains low levels of formaldehyde can cause burning and watering eyes. Carpet is also a breeding ground for things that trigger asthma attacks, such as dust mites, dander and spores.

Thermostat
Temperature can affect comfort and indoor environmental quality. Changing thermostat settings or opening windows to try to control temporary changes in temperature can worsen comfort problems. Classroom temperatures should be maintained between 68 degrees and 75 degrees Fahrenheit during the winter months and between 73 degrees and 79 degrees Fahrenheit during the summer months.

Recycling bin
Recycling saves energy, money, raw materials and the environment and is easy for schools to do. Recycling bins should be clearly labeled so they aren’t used for other types of trash. They should be placed in convenient locations and should be emptied often. To keep pests away, do not keep recycled goods such as beverage containers, cans, paper, cardboard, etc., near the kitchen or food supply areas.
